As some of you know by now I am working on starting my own branding firm in the near future. I started a design company once before but things don’t always go so well when there are partners involved. So without getting into details, things just didn’t work out so I sold my share of [...]
Why You Should Spend The Day With A Camel
On Saturday I spent the day with a camel. Well that’s a bit of an overstatement. I spent most of the day waiting for the camel to show up. I volunteered with my girlfriend Chrissy at the Edgar Banks Celebration, part of The City of Eustis’ 125th anniversary.
As freelancers (I still hate that term), we may not be as involved in the community as we would like. I try to be but I would like to do much more. I am here to tell you to get involved! Volunteer for things that you have going on in your city. I have my reasons:
It Builds Credibility
Nothing builds a solid reputation like being seen at many of the charitable events around town. I volunteer (via Chrissy) for lots of things sponsored by the city. If someone askes you for a reference and you can honestly give them the City Commissioner’s name then things are gonna be good.
It Lets people know your name
Being the most credible designer does nothing for you if people don’t know your name. Use these opportunities to introduce yourself. Don’t be a salesman, but genuinely say hi to people and ask them what thier position is with the organization that is hosting the event. This is a great way to not only meet people but to also let people meet you. Again, don’t push a sale on them but if they ask you what you do be sure to have a business card handy.
It Shows People You Care
Let’s face it: people are far more inclined to use a business that is involved in the community than one that isn’t. Get involved with any local events that you can. Not only will people see you being involved but you will feel good about yourself for helping out.
Bottom line is to get involved with your city somehow. 90% of the time it isn’t going to cost you anything but an occasional Saturday. You can thank me later.

Good article.
You briefly mentioned that you don’t like the term freelancer, I don’t like it either. I’ve started calling myself and independent web designer instead. It sound more dignified.

Thanks Brad. I am currently writing an article about why I don’t like the term “freelancer”. Thank you for reading and check back with me later today, the new post should be up.
